Transfer and Adult Degree Completion Students

Game Plan for Transfer & Adult Degree Completion Students

Connecting Career and Work Experience to Areas of Study

  • You and your coach will review your previous college and/or work experience.  Our goal will be to connect your college and/or work experience to careers and majors.  It’s important to determine what majors will allow you to apply a majority, if not all, of your previously earned college credit.  Your coach will help you consider whether or not pursuing more specialized majors (that might take you longer to finish) are in your best career interest.  Your coach will help you identify career pathways.

Exploring Transfer and Adult Friendly Colleges and Universities

  • Your coach will work with you in identifying transfer and adult friendly colleges and universities that interest you.  He will help you consider the pluses and minuses of re-locating to finish your bachelors.  You will research schools and discuss any interests and concerns you have with your college coach.  He will assist you in creating a set of questions to ask of colleges and universities…remember you are interviewing them!  Make the most of campus visits – fully explore the who, what, when, where, and how of the colleges you are considering. This is an important process of exploration and investigation, the more prepared you are, the more you will learn about each school you are considering..  He will also help you to consider if face-to-face, fully online, or hybrid delivery formats are best for your work/life situation.

Getting Admitted with as Many Transferable Credit Hours as Possible

  • Your coach will help you review the admissions criteria of schools that you are considering.  He will assist you in objectively assessing your qualifications for admission.  Your coach will work with you to obtain transfer evaluations from schools for degree programs that you are considering.  With your coach, you will examine what colleges are willing to accept in transfer and how much time it will take to complete the bachelor’s degree and/or license.  Is this a good deal for you?  Your coach will help you to answer that question.  If you have questions about what is or is not being accepted in transfer, your coach will support you in this questioning.

Paying for College

  • After completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), your coach will explain the student aid report.  He will help you to determine, if any appeal, based on change in circumstances is warranted.  Your coach will assist you in researching and applying for any outside scholarships.  Your coach will help you to do apples to apples comparisons of financial aid packages from various schools.   If there is a gap (often the case) between your financial aid award and the cost of attendance, your coach will work with you on affordability options.  Strategize with your coach ways to request better financial aid packages from schools.  Your coach will also help you search for fast-track, accelerated options to reduce costs by figuring out how to finish in as least amount of time as possible.

Decision Time

  • After you have a plan in place to finance your education at one, two, three, or more schools, your coach will assist you in reaching a final decision.  You will discuss the pros and cons and create a score card with your coach.  He will help you to plan and make final visits to the schools still on your list.  He will help you to identify tough follow up questions to ask schools to better assess their strengths and weaknesses.  After the decision is made – your coach will support you in planning for orientation, roommates (if applicable), professors, and first semester.

Continued Support

  • If desired, your coach will stay in contact to hear how things are going – helping you trouble-shoot issues that may arise.  Your coach will proactively contact you at the beginning, middle and end of first-term.   You can request a face-to-face or online meetings with your coach.  This is a big investment.  Your coach is dedicated to making sure you make the most of it.
